Birds of Maya “Killer In the Snow” from Vol. 1 (2008)
Before there was Purling Hiss and Spacin’, Mike Polizze (of the former) and Jason Killinger (of the latter) channeled the spirit of early Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer with the intensity of the Stooges in Birds of Maya. These riffs aren’t new, but if you play ‘em like you own ‘em, it can work; imitation is the highest form of flattery. It’s not much more than down and dirty riffs, crashing drums and scorched vocals, but it’s gonna keep you comin’ back. Vol. 1 is still the band’s best release, but the 2xLP Ready to Howl will do some damage to ya if you let it - it’s a radiation burn, one that reveals itself to you over a bit of time. The band’s been kind of on a hiatus due to the activity of the aforementioned bands, but this month is bringing us a new Birds of Maya LP, entitled Celebration. It’s culled from various live material, which if this video is any indication, is a really good thing for us. It’s gonna be released on Little Big Chief records soon enough, though the label’s already sold out. Check in with Permanent, Fusetron and Goner for copies later in the month, and pick up Vol. 1 and Ready to Howl wherever you can find ‘em. It’ll be a much gnarlier summer with Birds of Maya as your grilling tunes.
